Tampa
Auto Accidents Attorney for Injuries Sustained in Rainstorms
Whether it's a misty morning or a tropical
downpour, driving in the rain can be dangerous. Residents
in the Tampa Bay area often must drive in rainstorms daily,
and it's not unusual to see at least one auto accident as
you travel down the area's wet, slippery roads.
Tampa auto accidents
attorney Dale Appell, P.A. has represented many clients
who have been injured in rainstorm-related accidents. Oftentimes,
these auto accidents are caused by excessive speed, limited
visibility, and a lack of knowledge about how to drive safely
in the rain.
While it is often recommended not to drive
in the rain at all if you don't have to, here are some rain
driving tips in case you find yourself in the middle of a
storm:
-
Reduce the speed limit by about one-third (i.e., from 60
miles per hour to 40 miles per hour).
-
Turn on your headlights, but not your high beams—this is
especially important in fog, because high beams could cause
glare and reduce your visibility.
-
Tap your brakes occasionally. It will help other drivers
to see you and it will sweep some of the water off your
brakes.
-
Apply brakes gently. Don't slam on the brakes.
-
Sometimes it is safer to pull over and turn on your hazard
lights in heavy rain, but be careful that you do not get
stuck on the shoulder of the road or put yourself in a place
where you might be hit by other cars
-
Be very careful crossing flooded roads. Don't go through
water that is more than a few inches deep
-
In strong winds, keep both hands on your steering wheel
and avoid traveling next to other vehicles
