Preparing Your Teen to Be a Safe
Driver on Tampa, Florida Area Roads
When your child approaches driving age,
it stirs up a wave of different emotions. You feel proud
your child is becoming more independent, happy that he
or she will have more opportunities for fun, and excited
that your child will be better prepared for education
and work. On the flip side, you also may feel anxious
or afraid that your teen may get into an accident causing
damage to the car—or worse yet—serious physical injuries.
Your fear and anxiety are justifiable,
especially if your teen will be cruising along the busy,
high speed roads of Tampa, Town 'n' Country, Brandon,
Seminole Heights, Lutz, St Petersburg, or elsewhere in
the area. To ease your worry, Tampa
auto accident attorney Dale Appell, P.A. recommends
the following tips to help prepare your teen to be a safe
driver:
- Give your teen lots of practice—It
is recommended that parents set aside 50 hours to teach
their child to drive and practice safe driving skills.
This is a top factor in how well your teen will drive
when he or she is going solo.
- Take your teen to drive on many
different Tampa, FL roads—Variety not only keeps your
driving practice interesting, but it teaches your teenager
about the wide range of circumstances he or she may
encounter.
- Consider professional lessons—Once
you take your teen around for some training and practice,
enroll your teen in professional driving school lessons.
A driving school completion certificate can reduce your
car insurance rates and also will give your teen a solid
foundation of driving skills.
- Do not allow passengers—After your
teen receives a drivers license, enforce one important
rule for at least the first 6 months: no passengers
allowed unless there is a responsible adult present
in the car. Many studies have shown that distractions
by peers are a top reason for teenage drivers getting
into car accidents.
- Other important teen driving rules—No
cell phone use and no texting should be allowed while
driving. Seatbelts must be worn at all times, whether
you're in Tampa or smaller communities such as Sun City
Center, Riverview, Carrollwood, Dade City, Seffner,
Ybor City, or Clearwater.
As a parent, your first concern is the
safety of your child. In addition to your child's safety,
there is the additional concern that you as a Florida
parent can be held liable for injuries and damages caused
by your child's negligence while driving. All of these
worries combined are often more than enough to convince
parents to make sure their teenagers are equipped with
the very best driving skills and knowledge.
